Finally an update to Color!

I just noticed that a new update to Apple's Pro Apps is available.
FCP 6.0.5
Compressor 3.0.5
Color 1.0.3 Shake 4.1.1
Have any of you gurus had any advance hands-on with the Color upgrade? I'm just about to start a new grading project on a feature. I sure wouldn't mind it if I did that on a more stable Color than my last project. But I'm hessitant to upgrade before I hear that it's a good stable rev.
Any advice or info is welcome.
Cheers,
Paul

Tangent Control Surface Mappings Are Improved
The HSL qualifier and reset control surface mappings for the Tangent CP100 control surface have been fixed.
looks like the JL Cooper guys are fast asleep and my Eclipse will still be missing the inside/outside button making me reach for the tablet again and again...
All I want for x-mas is that little button to work.

For those who are working with RED footage, it should be noted that it does not render a full debayer. The highest debayer that it preforms is the same as half high (like the setting in REDAlert/REDRushes).
It's still a very high quality and the flexibility that the R3D files have is really amazing compared to anything else.

[Juan Morales]"o Tangent Wave support yet... Neither is the Firewire and Desktop Preview. But that's hardly surprising. It seems more stable than before though."
Kinda doubt we'll ever see Firewire preview- sorta negates the whole point of color correction to preview it on a Firewire out. Time to look into an AJA or Kona card.

Keep in mind Firewire works today on an AJA IoHD. It's limited to SD only but it does work. Not sure if it will ever support HD.

Yeah, I think that people forget or are simply unaware there are bitrate thresholds that have to be met. FireWire SD is easy. If you want to send HD through it, that requires more bandwidth. If there is no processor at the other end, then its going to have to be something that the monitor understands. That is why SDI works. And then there's the issue of -- what? FireWire 1.5Gig? FW800 can't support uncompressed HD bitrates and that's why there is ProRes. But we're back to a codec, then, and so the other end needs to decode that and around we go....

Considering Apple's entire Beta testing team for Final Cut Studio could be counted on one of your hands, not very many people get early testing with the software period. This is why you see so many issues with any and all Studio Updates. A few people with very particular setups test the software in very limited scenarios.
I prefer to wait at least three weeks before running any Pro Apps updates to allow all the "public beta testers" to see what's wrong first. Until Apple gets a real beta testing program going again (not likely to happy) it's always going to be "user beware" with any updates.
I'm not using RED and don't really see anything earth shattering in the release notes that says I need to update. Over the Christmas holidays I like to really do clean ups and often will erase my hard drives to do clean installs all the way around so at that time if the updates look like they didn't break too much, I'll update.

Prelimary tests indicate ...
PAL ... Still broken!
Interlaced footage being destroyed by changes in geometry room (e.g. P&S being brought over from FCP) ... still broken!
Hooray. With any luck, only another 10 months to wait for another update.
Can anyone else confirm these ... there is blurb in the release notes about interlaced footage being fixed in Geometry room, so I am quite surprised at my result.

Hi Floh,
I guess you work a lot with SD PAL. What's going on?
Why those shifts in level and phase in the Videoscope?
Is just the Videoscope that doesn't works properly as Jurand suggests?

rafael

I do not trust the Color waveforms very much (and not the FCP ones either), so we do monitor our levels externally most of the time, and we use a hardware Legalizer on the output for broadcast material, not the Color Broadcast Safe filter.
The SDI out from the Kona 3 is consistent between Color and FCP (and Media 100, which is even more important to us, since we try to avoid FCP as much as possible), and that is what matters for us.

try relinking the media...could be that the update has reverted your system back to its original status and you've moved your render or other directories. again i havent had this problem...

[kim krause]" a potential screw up. color wont save my projects properly...spinning beachball of death followed by app is not responding prompt..." Many of us are suffering this issue since the release of Color 1.0.2
The only solution is to avoid Comm-S. Wait for the Auto Save to work and Comm-Q.
If by mistake you hit Comm-S, just let the ball spin. Although it can takes long.
In the end you my find a curious "-C" file in your HD root level. Beside the Application folder.
If you double lick it you will find what Color has been doing while pinning: A duplication of all the "Colors Documents" folder. Just delete it.
This together with the Broken PAL where the two issues I hoped where fixed with this update.
I wish my English would good enough to express what I think without being rough. So i will shut my mouth.

thanks for the help...indeed i did have a -c thing in there......as for pal....i work almost exclusively in pal and have never had a problem. what exactly seems to be the problem
Re: Finally an update to Color! by Rafael Amador on Nov 25, 2008 at 3:45:10 pm
Hi Kim,
I posted this a couple of days ago:
http://forums.creativecow.net/readpost/8/1012339 Jurand say that is the VideoScope what is broken in PAL.
I really don't know if is just that, I have not an external WaveForm monitor to check that.
Whatever the reason of the problem, Color is not reliable to work with PAL.

reposted here:
if you look abit closer, you'll see its not the scopes thats the problem...its the way video comes into color. read the above and you see in rgb its fine...therefore its the yuv conversion.depending on your settings and what format your using. you can double check this by correcting the bars and then sending them to tape then looking at the result through a "real" scope. so dont blame the scopes....the whole point of color correcting is to "take crap and make it art", so if its beautiful on the screen and beautiful when you send it back to fcp then you've done your job. scopes shouldnt be a crutch, just a tool.
those are my thoughts....btw the funny "save in color thing" just went away and everything is back to normal. i've also been very successful in bringing avid projects into fcp/color with the duck and back and i have to say that for my clients and their budgets this is still one of the best solutions by far.

Hi,
Big issue here with the Color update. Not only Pal sd clips are broken in Color (empty clips with a red cross in the Color timeline, but also with XD Cam HD 50i and 25P. DVC Pro HD 50i and 25P work fine. There is a workaround for Pal SD clips. If you put them in an HD Sequence in FCP and send them to Color 1.03, they read fine in the Color timeline. Doesn't work with the XDCam HD clips though. Is this a Color 1.03 problem or a FCP 6.05 (xml) issue?
Re: Finally an update to Color! by Hans Vernhout on Nov 28, 2008 at 6:50:35 am
Same problem here after the update. Clips come in empty (red cross) from FCP.
I managed to get the clips into Color by going the EDL route (XML export/import doesn't work) as a workaround. So does this point to broken XML from the Final Cut Pro export after the update, as was suggested earlier in this thread? Than Color might not be to blame for this annoying problem.

just watch out for the save function no behaving sometimes. i set auto save to 1 minute and evrything seems okay but manually saving still hangs up color. then you have to go through the whole project and replace the shots that didnt get saved. wish apple would fix this rather huge bug.

[kim krause]"just watch out for the save function no behaving sometimes. i set auto save to 1 minute and evrything seems okay but manually saving still hangs up color."
If you get this problem, you can open the "Activity Monitor.app" and force quit the Process "GZip". Then Color will save correctly.
