color woes
by Sean Davison on Oct 13, 2008 at 7:42:42 pm

I Took an Avid AAF - Imported it with media into FCP via Automatic Duck. Media Managed the sequence to create proper QTM Movies (Pro Res 422) Sent to Color - Graded and Rendered, then sent back to FCP - FCP says its importing the XML but links back to the original files rather than the rendered graded files. Haven't had this happen for a while!

Any Idea why?

I'm re digitising the original sequence via edl/Batch Digitise - Does any one know how import CC works? Does it use clip names or the number of the shot?

Sounds like some sort of a problem with the media conversion when you converted the Avid media.

Whenever we bring in an Avid AAF we always redigitize the material on our FCP systems. That's how we did three seasons of Good Eats and we never had any issue like what you're describing.

Instead of re-digitizing everything you could just manually re-connect all the media in the timeline to the Color Renders. Just Un-check "Matched Name only" or whatever it says so you can freely reconnect any shot to any media.

Color just numbers all the shots in your timeline starting at 1 so your first shot in the timeline will be Color Renders > Project Folder > Folder 1 > 1_g1 (or g2, g3, g4 depending on which grade you used)

Then repeat for the rest of the shots. Takes a bit of time but certainly easier than re-digitizing the entire show.

Oh and be sure to separate your audio in the timeline before you do this.

[walter biscardi] "That's how we did three seasons of Good Eats and we never had any issue like what you're describing. "

Actually I take that back.

Right when Color was released or maybe it was the last incarnation of Final Touch, I can't remember now and can't find the posts here in this forum, I had to manually reconnect 6 entire episodes of Good Eats because FCP could not reconnect the media properly. I think it was a DVCPro HD deal at the time, but I do remember it cost me quite a bit of money because I had to bring in two other editors to work with me to re-assemble all 6 shows in one week.

That was very painful and I guess I just blocked that whole deal from my memory banks. So that was a very similar deal to what you have now, but we never did work with Avid originated media and nothing like this has happened certainly since Color 1.0.2 has been in use.
