Adding curve points without it moving
by Aaron Neitz on Jul 2, 2008 at 8:21:13 pm

Hey color gurus,

Any way to add points to a curve and not have it pop out of line? No matter what I do, adding points always results in a couple pixels shift one way or another.

thanks

Those curves are B-Splines, not Bezier curves.

That's not my question:

How do I add control points without the curve being affected? i.e. I want to add 3 points to the Saturation Curve in Secondaries so I can desaturate just the reds....when you click to add your 3 control points, you get little shifts in the curve...

Sorry, I misunderstood you. I've noticed that shift, too.

This drives me crazy. It's almost a game for me now. It's like trying to take cheese off of a mouse trap with out having it snap on you! I've done it a couple of times without having it move, but the majority of the other times it's not so kind.

I also don't like how sensitive the hue curve controls are. It's really hard to make fine adjustments with it.

I thought there was a secret keypress I hadn't discovered! Oh well. At the end of the day, it doesn't make that huge of a difference, but for precision's sake, it's nice to start at ZERO before making adjustments.

I'm hoping this long lull in Color updates will give us some much needed fixes. It's a stellar piece of software.

I would not hold my breath.

Curves? Never use them. Waste of space.

You need to add a LOT of points to the curves. When I'm working with those curves, I'll start with the three basic points to form essentially the "bell jar."

Then once you have that basic shape, you start adding more points to limit that curve and change the shape of it. I've had as many as 20 or 30 points in a very small space on a curve to ensure that I only affect the areas I want to affect.

It's a bit of a pain to work with at first, but once you get the hang of it, it's not bad.

I absolutely love the curves and use them often.

I'm with you Walter. Curves are uber-powerful and I can get really specific results very quickly with them. They are a bit of a bear to work with sometimes - the way points react / the b-spline reacts, etc...

Amen to that.

You must learn to love the spline... Looove the spline... loooooove the f**king spline...

Yeah, it would be nice if the rest of the curve was not so affected by a single point, but once you figure it out, it's not so bad. The only really hard part is when you're trying to put two points close together. Sometimes you have to space them out just to create points, then drag them in closer together to get what you need.
