can color read fcp reel information?
by Paul Escandon (mr.escandon) on Jun 27, 2008 at 5:02:44 pm

Is it possible for Color to read the logged FCP reel information or does that information have to be in the clip name for Color to recognize it? I edited a show from an editor who had the reel info in the clip name and I was able to group clips from like reels accordingly in color and apply corrections to all clip from that reel which really was a time saver. Now I just got a show from an editor who named her clips according to what in the clips with no reel information and from within Color all I can see is clip name in the Shots area of the Setup tab. It seems silly that there's no reel column so that I can sort via reel.

Any ideas? Thanks.

In general the worflow from FCP to Color is meant to be on an arranged sequence level, not random clips from a bin. In that case it falls more on the editor to take the color correction versions and re-sequence them as they wish. Or they could also simply create a master sequence with the clips arranged to their liking.

I fancy myself a fairly smart guy but that paragraph made no sense to me at all. :/

Sorry- was trying to respond to what it sounds like is your issue. You are saying you are sending clips that are not part of a sequence to Color for correction- my response was that's not how it's meant to be used. Perhaps I misunderstood your initial post.

Oh okay - that makes sense now. You misunderstood me or I was just unclear.

I am indeed sending an entire sequence to Color. That's not the problem. What I am saying is that once in Color it would be nice if I could see what reel each individual clip was coming from (as logged in FCP) so that I can group them together and apply one grade to all clips from each reel. Using the shot browser in Color - the only piece of information I can see is the file name of the clip. I was wondering if there was any way to extrapolate the reel name because that's how I would like them grouped. But I don't see it being an option.

I see what you're saying- you might try a different workflow. Export an XML from FCP and use that to import into Color rather than a simple Send to Color. The manual explains how to do this.

You can indeed export an XML, but the end result will be the same. COLOR does not look any deeper than the clip name.

Yeah that's kind what I thought too. Might be a simpler workflow in FCP to sort by reel and then add a reel number to each clip name before sending to Color.
