DPX files in 25 fps ?
by Mats Andersen on May 19, 2008 at 7:12:32 pm

Howdy Cow!
I am going to online a commercial shot on a RED camera.

I have exported DPX files in 25 fps from RedCine.

When I import these directly to color it looks like they are 24 fps, and if I import them and then change the framerate to 25 in color my preview of the footage shows something that seems like random frames.

When I render the footage from color and import it to final cut pro the synch gets wrong (both when I export 24 and 25).

Anyone who knows what this can be ?

Regards
Mats

Before you import your footage, you have to set the project to 25 fps, then import your footage and change the fps in the lower right settings.
The random frames useually comes if there are corrupt frames or missing frames.

hope it helps.
best
Martin

There is a known issue with 25fps in REDCine.

For some reason it fails to correctly read the metadata on 25fps clips and instead handles them as 24fps (embedding the wrong timecode in the DPXs would be one example of that).

It's not a hugely difficult to fix, but unfortunately you'll have to do your REDCine export again.

To fix it, go into the Library in REDCine and click on the little shaded bar at the bottom of each clip that contains the timecode. From here you can change the framerate of each clip correctly back to 25fps.

RED is aware of this problem and presumably will fix it in a new version in the near future (probably after RED build 16 is out).

I've found Color's DPX conform to be a little quirky on occasions, but it seems to be generally alright most of the time, but I haven't finished any real RED projects in it yet, I just use it for testing, the real finishing is done in Baselight.

Thanks!

I found a great workaround in an earlier post on this forum:

1. Import 25 fps edl as cutlist with QT fil as source media.
The color project is now created perfectly.
2. Export an EDL from the new color project.
3. Import that EDL as a cut list with the DPX sequence as source material.

When I did this it worked as it should.

I recomend others who are going to online/grade their first RED project to start an exta day before deadline. There are a lot of pitfalls, but the format is very nice.

Regards
Mats
