What happened with my Groups??

I'm working on a very lengthy project and am relying on the grouping properties of the Shots tab to apply my grades. The problem is that ALL the groups I've EVER created are showing up in the Shots window and now it's so cluttered I can't create any more groups. I press G and it moves one of the empty groups from another project to the bottom of the window and stacks them up... empty.
I've tried deleting them one by one but they come back on next open. I've even tried AppZapping Color and re-installing but it the mess remains. I know it can't be stored in the projects also because I opened a project from last year and all the groups where there as well.
Please let me know what I can try. This is so frustrating!
