Changes not relinking?
by Dylan Reeve (Sycophant) on May 6, 2008 at 5:15:34 am

I've graded and rendered a sequence in Color, sent it back to FCP, all fine. I've started to build effects and stuff on the FCP sequence, but I need to make some minor changes to a few of the grades.

I open up the Color project again, make my changes, select the shots I've changed, add to render queue and Render. All fine.

However when I return to my FCP sequence what I'm seeing there is not reflecting my changes.

If I check in the Color Renders folder for a specific shot I see something like:
17_g1.mov
17_g1.mov Copy 1

The non-copy one (17_g1.mov) has the newer timestamp, and looking at it in Quicktime it seems to be the right one too. The other is older, and does in fact contain the previous render.

In FCP I can see that indeed the piece of media in the timeline is pointing at the correct file, but it's not showing me what I actually see in there in Quicktime. Even if I reconnect the clip manually to the later grade I see no difference.

What am I missing here?

Nothing in the FCP timeline is rendered yet.

Not that it's much help but I have had the same problem. Not sure what was going on. I ended up saving the original grade in colo(u)r, and sending the individual clip again from a new timeline applying the grade and tweaking from there. Send back to FCP and copy/paste clip into the original timeline. Horrible work around but was pressed for time so needed to quickly get it out but was not desirable at all.

I have found that, usually, when I quit FCP and restart again it will figure it out. Although it seems if I am too quick on the restart then it doesn't.

I'm still really not sure why it's doing it. Even reconnecting the media manually doesn't work.

My approach now is make a list of changes I need to make, open the Color project(s), make the changes, select shots, add selected (is there no 'Render Changed shots' option) and render. I do all the changes and renders in one go, then restart FCP and it seems to be working as expected.

Another frustration I found is that if I replace a shot is a sequence with a new one (rather than just trim some edits), export a new XML and try to reconform in Color it will just crash. Every time. I can reconform where the edits are only slipped a little, but if any shot is changed (even if it's removed and not replaced) it will crash Color in the reconform.

This is Color's big I/O problem. It really needs to be the VERY last step in your process. Except we all know there's very few times when you DON'T go back and tweak things in the edit.

Hopefully the Apple team is working overtime on these problems. They're pretty huge.

I second this post. I also have to frequently quit fcp to make the clips refresh, as stated above manual relinking will not do. So this seems to actually be an fcp problem rather than color for once.

Same problem here. I use the workarounds you all mentioned. A pain in the you know what.
