HDV to ProresHQ
by David Gott on May 1, 2008 at 3:33:32 am

I'm working on a project shot on the Canon XH-A1 HDV 1440x1080.

We media managed to Prores HQ 1440x1080. When importing into Color, I can't set the resolution to 1440x1080 (only Custom-which crops the picture).

So...I have it set to 1920x1080. The aspect ratio appears correct, but there is an increase in contrast both in Color and when sent back to FCP.

Is there a proper way to set up Color using Prores HQ 1440x1080, or do we have to media manage to Prores HQ 1920x1080 before sending to Color?

Thanks for any input.

-David

[David Gott] "We media managed to Prores HQ 1440x1080. When importing into Color, I can't set the resolution to 1440x1080 (only Custom-which crops the picture)."

That's incorrect when you media managed the project, or you're reading it wrong. ProRes is a full raster format, so your video would be 1920x1080 after going through ProRes.

As for the anamorphic formats, Color always works full raster, so when I bring in DVCPro HD 720 material, I work in 1280x720 in Color even though the original footage is 720x960. This works perfectly fine. Same with 1080i material that is 1280 or 1440 wide. I always work in 1920x1080 and the material going back to FCP is always formatted correctly in DVCPro HD.

Thanks Walter,

So when i keep the final cut pro project in 1440x1080 the image looks fine. Are you saying i should set only color to 1920x1080 ? When I set fcp to 1920x1080, the image is anamorphic. Is this the correct setup?

And do you have any ideas why the color is shifting on the roundtrip from color to fcp? Is it because I have the resolutions set differently in fcp and color ? The image is slightly blue and contrasty.

I really appreciate your help I'm a little new to all this.

David
