What is the best video card for Color?

I have a ATI 1900… Is the new ATI a lot better or should I opt out for a Quadro? Can I use the Quadro Plex work? What can I do to crank up the speed?

Thanx, dan.

1900 is what we run here. And that's a graphics card, not a video card. Video cards are made by AJA and BlackMagic for Color and of those, I would recommend AJA.

The ATI 1900 like I said in my first post. That's what we run in our shop. For a brand new Mac Pro, the ATI 2600 is what I would purchase.

I wonder which one is better though, the ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT or the X1900XT. In the Apple store page, it says that the 1900 has 512 mb and goes for $399 and the 2600 has 256 mb and goes for $149. I use the X1900, it's a good card, but it tends to overheat and the fan gets noisy, it works great in Color though.

The X1900 XT is a faster/higher end card than the 2600 XT even though it is older. For performance comparisons, see this article:

According to apple you need the ati x1900 if you want 10 bit processing.

Walter...

The X1900 would speed up rendering as well, correct?

Right now my dual 2.5 GHz G5 has a Radeon 9600 XT.

Thanks in advance,

That's the theory, but right now Color is rendering very very slowly. More slowly than when it was Final Touch. A 22 minute episode takes up to 6 hours to render. Used to take 2 hour max when it was Final Touch.

Thanks, Walter.

Took more than 3.5 hours to render about 4 minutes of material just now.

I'm looking for ways of speeding it up, other than getting a Octo-Intel Mac render farm... :-)

If nothing else, perhaps a faster card will reduce the lag time so that I can at least review what I'm doing in near-real time.
