no rendered files after rendering
by James Meagher on Jan 28, 2008 at 6:50:34 am

hello,

I've just finished grading my first short project in Apple COLOR. I double-checked all the render options in the PROJECT SETTINGS tab of the SET-UP room, and chose a new destination folder in the RENDER DIR... area. I went with APPLE PRORES422. I rendered all my clips in the RENDER QUEUE room and that seemed to go just fine (yellow bars turned green, etc, etc..)

I then did a save in COLOR before choosing SEND TO FINAL CUT PRO. That's when I got a warning message telling me that not all my files were rendered (though they appeared to be), and asking if I'd like to continue on anyway. I decided to give it a go and sent the project back to FCP. In FCP a new sequence appeared in my project with the color label attached to the end of the name. I opened the sequence in the timeline and it contained all the ungraded clips I'd sent to COLOR.

I went to the folder where all of my rendered clips should be and sure enough, COLOR did create nice, new numbered folders for each clip right where they should be...only they're all empty - no files in the folders...only folders.

So I went back to COLOR and tried the process again, this time changing my destination folder and also changing the codec to Uncompressed 8bit. Everything appeared to render properly, but ultimately I got was a bunch of empty folders where the rendered files should be.

If anyone has any ideas as to how I can rectify this issue I'd love to hear them!!!

BTW, I'm on COLOR 1.0.2.

Cheers,
James

You need to set up your render directory and codec BEFORE you add your shots to the render queue. Clear your render Queue, set up everything (render dir, codec), add your shots and render (maybe only 2 or 3 clips as a test). They should appear in their correct folders for Color to be able to send them back to FCP.

Thanks for the suggestion. I was pretty sure that I had made all my render choices before adding the clips to the render queue...and in my following attempts I definitely cleared the render queue and then retried with only 2 clips at a time. The same thing happened over and over again no matter what choices I made or in what order I made them.

Finally I closed down COLOR and did a Restart, and then reopened COLOR. Without making any new changes, I rendered a clip and it worked perfectly well. I then re-rendered my sequence without any further problems and it opened a new Sequence with the new graded clips in FCP exactly as it should.

I don't know what was wrong, but I got it fixed, so for now I'm happy!!!

Thanks for you suggestion though. You were probably on the money.

Cheers,
James

Yes, I have encountered this COLOR is "shooting blanks" problem and it happens when you fill the render queue and THEN change the target directory. I think its the same UNIX protocol that demands navigation to the item before choosing to do anything... import, export, whatever. An actual menu-oriented browse mode would be appreciated.

In short, don't do anything, and I mean anything, until all the targets are selected. Choose the Render directory, THEN fill the render queue -- I'm willing to bet that you got the default renders... they DO exist, but not where you expect them to be, or where the SEND TO... FCP expects them to be, either. An APPLE-F would probably have revealed that.

JPO
