Curtains for colouring room??
by Tim Maloney on Nov 19, 2007 at 1:22:18 am

No I'm not going out of business.

I have had a guy in today to measure for curtains in our edit suite that can be drawn around when doing grading. This will block ambient light.

I read around the traps that the walls of the room should be 18% grey I am assuming that is a pantone no.

If so I will get a curtain colour that closely matches 18% grey. Do I have any latitude and if so should I trend to the darker or lighter side.

The lighting I will use will be table lamps not reflecting on the screen at 6500K.

Am I headed in the right direction?

Definitely in the right direction. More than anything a properly calibrated and high quality monitor will make the difference.

We just went with blackout blinds on our windows. No curtains at all.

But then again we don't have grey walls either. We're an edit suite first and coloring suite second. We're hoping to build a new facility in the next two years and this time around we will plan for color grading in all the rooms, while maintaining the character of each room. :-)

I was actually unable to find gray paint. I had to custom make it by having the paint store add black to white paint until I got what I wanted.

I've been using the TCP bulbs for years. Used to have to buy bulbs from StockerYale that were astronomical in price.

Slightly OT, but one of the coolest features I put in our main edit suite was a motorized curtain rod with a remote. Very old-school analog.

It's the little things man! I'm going to do the same thing in our new 50's style movie theater "Rialto Room" for the gaming plasma screen. We're building a "concession stand" to hold all the electronics on one side and actual snacks / candy on the other. You'll flip a switch when you want to play XBox 360 or Wii and the curtain will open to reveal a 42" plasma screen on the wall.

clients LOVE the little things!
