Color issues on startup

Ok, so, some of you have seen my posts some haven't, Many of my problems derive from the digital labs I work in at Brooks Institute.
Got another stumper (is this even a phrase?) for every one.
In one of the labs we use color in, (28 computers in the lab all mac pros all 2.6 ghz intels, all but 3 have a miserable 1gig of ram) we pushed out install packages, installed them, opened color set prefs on ONE machine, pre updates (so default color install) copied pref files from the student user (two users and root on each machine) sent them out, opened up color on all the machines, worked perfectly. The next day we installed all the updates. Now when ever I try to open color I get the following warning (note that the 'student account' has 0 admin privileges)
"Could not locate project Directory "/users/root/documents/color documents/" setting back to factory settings",
So I hit ok, and then...
Could not create Media Directory "/users/root/dDocuments/Color Documents. Internal error has occored.
So i hit ok and then...[do you see where this is going, it may just end up time to scroll down to return to post index]
Could not locate Rendering Directory "/users/root/Documents/Color Documents/Renders/" setting back to factory settings
So I hit ok and then....
'Could Not create meda directory "/users/root/documents/Color Documents/Renders/ Internal Error has occorred"
So than I hit ok and then...
Could No locate Media Directory "/users/root/documents/Color Documents/media" Setting back to factory settings"
hit ok and then...
'Could Not create media directory "/users/root/Documents/Color Documents/Media/ Internal Error has occorred"
hit ok and then...
Problems with preferences, please do a proper installation before proceeding
I hit ok and then color quits.
Now I know for a FACT everything was installed properly. Updates where done via commands in Apple Remote desktop. This is when the problem may have happened.
But heres the odd part, If i thaw the computer (we use deepfreeze to keep a stable and other wise safe lab) and uninstall color and clear all the preferences in student, re install color, and update, i get the same message. It happened to about 2/3 to 3/4 of the computers, with no pattern rhyme or reason for this.
When i installed Color at home, and opened it for the first time, setting up the prefs color crashed on me. Opening it back up I got the same dialgue sans the internal errors (admin account at home i guess) and it it runs great now [better after mr Biscardi's damned training dvd comes out]
So what the hell is going on, how do I fix it efficiently, and quickly. (the students are always wanting to use "school facilities" Honestly, whats wrong with them)
Sorry for the frequent comments, long post, possibly awful spelling, and over all lack of capitalization of the word "I"

Color is just not as forgiving of preferences issues as the other FCS apps. I'd try zapping your preferences. With that big a volume license you should also have a priority service contact and Apple should be able to help you directly to get things going correctly.

Yea, I guess I will try this. It's either keep it basically offline for another 4 weeks (It practically doesn't run on the 1 19" monitor) and try and figure it out on my own, call apple and deal with it thusly. or wait until those 4 weeks are up, and re-clone the lab off a new clone, which isn't a bad Idea for stability anyways

I'd go ahead and start now with Apple- I don't imagine a new clone will solve the basic issue which is at an OS level. That or try reinstalling Color directly on each machine with the install discs- not via the lab image.

I have the same problem. In a lab environment too - local account works, but all network accounts receive the same errors as you - even though they use the same user template. Have you found a solution yet?

I am still having trouble with this in our mac labs.
If I set up two identical user accounts - one authenticated locally, one authenticated via network (but both home directories are local). The locally authenticated one will open Color okay, but the network authenticated one produces the same errors that you got.
This occurs on multiple hardware types - Intel & PPC.

I'm thinking it's the cloning of the prefs that is the issue. Also, you say you only have 1GB RAM on all but 3 machines. This will also be an issue.
Color should not be treated like any other app in the Studio 2 package. Yes Apple rolled it in, but it's definitely immature as far as major network setups. You should install Color separately onto all the computers.
The single 19" monitor is not ideal, but it does work, just makes everything smaller. I've played with color on my 15" MacBook Pro and it's fine.
