We're doing some tests with the camera, planning on working in LOG-C mode. Anyone here had the chance to work with the D20's images and a viewing LUT for filmout? David Davidson

Not me, sorry.
But if you can share some test frames in DPX I would really like to toy around with D20 images...
If you can, tell me I'll give you an FTP acces you can upload them to.

First of all, let me apologize for our president. Secondly, when I get footage next week, I'll post it here and at the SC support forums. I'm particularily interested in the permutations of log in SQ mode is like.. David Davidson

I had the privilage of taking part in some test shootings for film-out with ARRI D-20 (Zaragoza HD conference, Spain, June 2006). We shot in Lineal and LOG (although LOG shooting made the ARRI guy quite nervous and he was surprised we demanded to to use that option). I was astonished by the quality of the images (I saw it projected in 4k un a HUGE (immense) screen. We color graded some shots with both QUANTEL'S PABLO and SGO's MYSTIKA. I could not attend to the showing of some of these shots blown-out to Film with ARRILASER. You can ask POLISPOL (He posted a question in this forum a week ago) or RAFA ROCHE in http://WWW.ACTV.INFO's forum (Spanish association of Cameramen).
It surprissed me how unbeliveable-easy-to-use it was compared to SONY's or PANASONIC's.

Thanks much for the lead.
Did you shoot HQ mode? I can't see the sense yet of acquiring in HQ, unless sony refitted the HDCAMSR studio decks to accept that. In the indie feature world, HQ seems good for VFX scenarios. David Davidson

I can't remember. Whe captured 422, 444 lin, 444 log streams. Whether in Sq or Hq I don't know. I never had someone actually telling me the compression differences in the SQ/HQ modes in SR. The D.O.P of the tests was Alfonso Parra. You might find an article he wrote about the tests in the web
During the test the camera had some problems caused by the mechanical shutter and ARRI got us a substitute second camera from England in 12 hours.

"I never had someone actually telling me the compression differences in the SQ/HQ modes in SR"
I could be wrong, but I believe SQ mode is a 4:1 compression at 440Mbps and HQ is a 2:1 compression at 880Mbps. But it is true that if the SRW-1 is the only deck at the moment that can playback in HQ mode.

Just finished a toyota car spot shot with the Viper and HDCAM SR 4:4:4 HQ.
The entire job is VFX and HQ was specifically requested for this job due to the amount of VFX.

David,
The footage I have with the D20 was shot in Log C HDCAM SR 4:4:4 SQ.
Lot of test charts and an exterior.
Demonstrates alot of what the camera can do.

Hi, Tony. Any chance we might see your images? I'm thinking of going over to Clairmont for some tests, but would love to see what you have beforehand.

The D20 is an awesome camera. I shot a music video with it last year, and was hugely impressed. It was the first thing I've directed where I barely needed to touch the footage. I think I corrected just two shots in the end. And, of course, we had the big Sony on set showing us precisely what we were shooting. Recently, I got the chance to see it projected at 4k and it holds up incredibly well. It just doesn't feel 'digital'. It's very, very clean, yes, but still has an organic feel to it. I miss shooting with it!
We also had a short film shot on the D20 come through the facility here a couple of weeks ago, which we graded on Final Touch. Again, it looked wonderful. More was done on the grade here, and the colourist was very impressed with how hard he could push the footage.
We didn't shoot log, but I'd be very interested to see the results of tests posted here.
Thanks,
Tom

In zaragoza they showed us some footage of a Videoclip. Was it yours? We were very impressed with it (We saw it in a 4k projection). It was a r'n'b song.
