So...just recently got a new Mac Pro, loaded, with Lion on it. Looks like Apple Color doesn't output via the Kona3 under Lion. Was just upgraded to CS6 as well, but it doesn't out via Kona3. BlackMagic / AJA don't play so DaVinci's out. I also have a non-SDI NVidia Quadro 4000.

I have a Sony LMD-232W broadcast monitor WITHOUT the SDI module for color monitoring.

My question is:
I need a new solution for being able to monitor color accuracy. Whether it's using my existing analog component RGB/YUV in monitor with a new PCIe card, or something else (affordable card / SDI monitor combo). I'm considering replacing my Kona3 with something that works with DaVinci Resolve since it seems SpeedGrade only wants to use an NVidia with SDI (apparently not available for Mac anyway).

Does anyone have any advice? A new DeckLink card? A Matrox solution? I'm just stuck here at the moment and I have to get moving forward on projects.

Any help is appreciated.
Thanks,

Jim

Jim,

I'm running a 2011 MacPro with Lion on it.
I am outputting via BMD Decklink HD Extreme 3D to a Flanders Scientific LM-2461W 10 Bit color grading Monitor.
I am currently running Adobe CS6 FCP and DaVinci and everything works great.

I also have a Quadro 4000 for my GPU for both Adobe and DaVinci.

My thoughts are if you want to use DaVinci, get a Blackmagic card with SDI out. The BMD Cards seem to play well with everything. Look at Flanders or something equivalent for color accurate monitoring. FSI has the best bang for the buck IMO.

you can find a sweet deal on a black magic decklink studio on ebay occasionally.
Several have sold in the last month for half price.

I just bought one for $ 299 this week.

to replace a now end of lifed Kona Lh-e

Thanks guys.

I think I'll take a look on eBay for a DeckLink product. If I don't find one there I'll probably just pick up the low end SDI card for $260 and the SDI module that I saw for my multi-format display engine ( $140 ) – all in all a super low cost solution to my problem.

I'm sad to be moving away from a long marriage with AJA though : (

I think I'd hold off on ending the AJA marriage until after the new Smoke release.

So ultimately (for those possibly stil listening) I decided to get the DeckLink SDI and the SDI module (used) for my monitor engine. It seemed to be the best (most economical) way to go. The 280 for the card and 550 for the module (1k new).

I downloaded and installed the Smoke 2013 preview. It's fun, though I'm not clear on how to get to the node editor and incorporate FX and 3D and all that yet. But, the color correction and editing is nice. However, 830 vs 3500 is a non-starter for me here at the office.

Thanks for all the replies. I think I'll pop the Kona back into the old machine for an additional workstation and wait for my next round of upgrades to consider the new Smoke.
