I was thinking of buying a Spyder4 Elite, when I saw this post:

If the Spyder is for print color calibration, are there any devices that will calibrate a monitor for digital? (I do both video and photography) I'm on a Macbook Pro with an external monitor, so getting an internal card isn't really an option.

Any recommendations you can make are appreciated.

There is no way to calibrate a computer monitor to show you the true color space of an HDTV or other TV. They are different monitors with different means in mind.

If you get a Video IO device like Matrox MXO2 Mini or Decklink option, that connects via Thunderbolt or Express34 (if your computer offers those options) then you can use those to get a video signal to an HDTV...and use that. But computer monitors aren't designed to show you video color. Unless your project is destined for web only release.

So, assuming that the vast majority of my work is indeed meant for the web, how about then?

Then the Sypder would be your best bet. Or the Eye2One.

Which, for me begs the (perhaps stupid) question... Given the time, if you had a project that was going to be split 50/50 web and broadcast distribution, should you do two separate grades?

You grade on the best possible option, the external monitor. Because it is your job to make it the best it can look. You have no control over how people's TVs or monitors are set up.

Besides, the Color Viewer in the Color app is VERY inaccurate. Far from trustworthy.
