Hello all,

I had a small question concerning the preparation of the timeline in FCP to go to color.
I know that a timeline has to be prepared and some shots with some effects have to be "backed" in before sending the timeline into color but I'm not sure what effects requires that protocol.

I have a 10 min project in ProRes 422HQ with shots where we put some effects on them in FCP.
The effects are:
- color corrector 3 way (which becomes the primary in Apple Color)
- speed (I know it requires to be backed in)
- Levels (gamma)
- colorize

My question is: Do I have to back in the shots with effects of levels and colorize ? The levels I used to create flash backs effects with the gamma setting.

I know that color correction is usually done last but for the levels effect that I use as flash back, would I be able to take it off, color correct in color send the timeline back to FCP and reapply the effect without having a screw up after ?

Thanks for suggestions !

You can remove the filter by "unchecking" it on the FCP timeline... you won't see it on the COLOR timeline and then you can re-apply or re-enable the filters on the return trip.

If its not a plugin or third-party filter, then its unlikely to be a problem for the round trip -- some exceptions do apply, for example if the filters were applied to speed ramps or freeze frames... and there are a few others, but it doesn't seem like its going to be an issue for you.

Hi- there is a PDF on my website, ubu-roi.com that covers pretty much all the angles of timeline prep for Color. It's on the color grading services page and is available for free download.
Cheers
Craig

Hi Craig,

I just downloaded your pdf - thanks a ton for going through all the work and putting that together!!

One question - my footage is in different fps, different size and one clip has a speed adjustment (200%) - if I use the compressor to make it all fit? (If I used a self contained QT, I would lose the ability to make changes - say to audio adjustments or subtitles - later in the process, correct?...

Many thanks,

Armin

oooop...

just saw your additional comments 15 / 16 on your pdf and have followed your advice - exported entire sequence as self contained QT and cut it up with the blade, send to color and so far it's looking good!

Thanks for the great pdf, that's saved my day!

Armin

Hello Armin-

Glad that it was helpful. It's been downloaded quite a few times, so I guess there are still a lot of people still using Color.

Best
Craig

Hi Craig,

yeah, your pdf totally saved the day...!

How come you're surprised I'm still using color? I didn't like FCP X so I'll stick with FCP 7 for now; then Color is the way to go, no?

Cheers, Armin
