Updating a previously graded FCP7 project - most efficient way?
by Sergey Levchin on Mar 26, 2012 at 8:17:09 pm
I have a 24-min video that was finished in Color a while ago. Recently I went in and made a few changes - extended some clips, cut out some sections, etc. Of course - I could not do it in the timeline that had been sent back from Color, so all the edits were done in an ungraded timeline, where all the clips are still referencing original media.
Now, the question is, what is the most efficient way to update this project with respect to color correction? Do I have to assemble all the new additions, export them to Color and grade them separately and bring them back? Or is there a way of conforming the old graded cut and the new ungraded cut?

Found it, I did - but it may have been better if I hadn't.
After reconforming - just as the manual would have me do - I've lost grades for about 2/3 of the shots.
And it seems there is no undoing it.
When I look at the shot list - it tells me that Color has "Added" the shots which have lost their grades, treating them as new. But they are not new at all.
Why did this manual-sanctioned operation reset my grades?
Is there any way of getting those grades back?

You should still have your original color project file. Reopening that should give you your old grades (but not with the new clips) if I understand your problem correctly.
The problem with the lost grades, did you re-edit your original sent to color sequence? And exported an XML file of that to use in color's reconform?
Or did you make a copy of the original sequence in FCP and did you export an XML of that?

Also note that the manual says it "should" update to reflect changes. Got a good laugh out of that when that update came out years ago...
Also can you open an archive of the project to recover?
