Manual Note on DVCPro HD
by walter biscardi on Jun 17, 2007 at 1:50:32 am

As I've started to open up and test Color on my main editing system, I found this note in the Manual regarding export / render formats. Apparently there is no support to render back out to DVCPro HD, I did not realize that. I would have to render to the ProRes codec in HD when working with DVCPro HD material.

This is something I completely missed the first time through and definitely a bit of a surprise. Was hoping we could use this for native DVCPro HD grading like we've done in the past, especially on our G5 machines where ProRes could present an issue.

From Page 86 of the Manual:

Compatible QuickTime Codecs for Output:
The purpose of Color is to create high-quality color-corrected media that can be reimported into Final Cut Pro for output to tape, QuickTime conversion, or compression for use by DVD Studio Pro. For this reason, the list of codecs that are supported for rendering out of Color is limited to high-quality codecs suitable for media exchange
and mastering.
Apple ProRes 422:
Apple ProRes 422 (HQ):
Uncompressed 8-bit 4:2:2
Uncompressed 10-bit 4:2:2

Color also supports the following third party codec for rendering.
AJA Kona 10-bit RGB

There's a full listing of all the codecs on Pages 84-86

Walter,

They are the only render "conversion" you select, you should be able to render back to DVCProHD as long as that is the file format you send to Color.

It'll always offer to render out in the source codec as well. These are only for intermediate.

We've done a DVCPRO HD job in Color and it did render out to the DVCPRO HD codec.

[tcurren] "We've done a DVCPRO HD job in Color and it did render out to the DVCPRO HD codec."

Good to hear. Certainly doesn't sound like it would work in both that entry and the matrix they show on pages 84-86. I'll be trying out some DVCPro HD tests on Monday.

The manual was a bit comfussing on this. One codec that I know of that has to be rendered to of of the listed options is HDV, which is a good thing. You can being in HDV footage but going out you with have to encode it as ProRes or Uncompressed.

Walter-

Just make sure you do a simple test first... I've have MAJOR problems (see postings way down below) with DVCPRO HD and Color in its roundtrip from FCP... The good news is when I first up-converted the codec to Prores and started from there it worked like a charm! seriously perfect!... although the file sizes we a bit higher.

Yeah same here - All DVC Pro HD stuff rendes back with pillar boxes - It's as if Color cant handle the 1440 frame size

Th pillar boxes were also happening if I rendered ti Pro res too....

We didn't experience that. We did have an issue with 16X9 flags being on in FCP causing issues in Color. We turned all of those off, PITA. They were only on as the offline editors were using anamorphic DV downconverts.
