Color on G5 Dual 2.7 PPC
by Bullet on May 26, 2007 at 2:31:29 pm

FWIW, Color is running fine on my dual 2.7 G5 Power PC. My graphics card is the X800XT. It is actually running much better and faster than Final Touch did on the same system. External previewing through a Kona 2 is working as well.

Breathing a sigh of relief here.

Same systems here!!! Great!!

- Did you test the system with SD or HD footage?
- Are you getting floating point?
- Any real time playback - format?
- What kind of drive arrays are you using?

Sorry for too many questions, I am still biting my finger until I start testing...
These are encouraging news....

I went Craigslisting for a card this morning for my dual 2.0 with 5200...as Color would open, but the UI was unusable and it took Color about 1 second to process each frame doing a simple primary in change.

Found a X800XT for $200, got it in this afternoon, and presently cooking away in float. About RT or a little slower with 23.98 SD material. 1080p material significantly slower, but I could still get something done if I HAD to.

Summary: X800 good enough to get SD work done, but can't wait for a new Intel box.

I tested with DVCPro HD 720p and am getting real time. Floating point- yes. SCSI 2 Tb RAID array- 14 drives.

I haven't tried SD yet but obviously expect no problems. Don't have any HDCam in the shop right now but expect performance to be considerably llower- but probably can make it work.

Color (Final Touch) still beats the hell out of the tools in FCP.

Yes it does. I've been waiting for something like this for years. I'll happily work around whatever shortcomings it has, and keep my fingers crossed that Apple eventually straightens it out some.

By the way, I had NO idea yesterday what an amazing find I got yesterday with an X800 at $200! I knew they were a little hard to find, but looking at completed auctions on Ebay is showing they're going for $500+! Lucky me.

We've spent about 1K last week on those cards.
I found one for $150 but it was broken and didn't notice when I got it. May the money serve him well.

Even 1K is way cheaper than buying new computers...
