DVCPRO HD and Apple ProRes playback problem. Please help, my deadline is in 10 days
by Seth Thy on Nov 2, 2009 at 9:05:32 am

Hi there,
I tried looking in older posts, but couldn't find an answer.

In short, this is my problem:

Workflow: DVCPRO HD 1080i50 edited in FCP sent to Color, than sent back and at the end it will be down converted to PAL resolution (Digi Beta) for broadcast.

Problem: Everything is OK in FCP, but in Color picture jitter and plays like it's dropping frames (on comp screen and on broadcast monitor). Picture is also squeezed, but since is OK when it's back to FCP that's not a problem.

Video Output is set on Kona 625i25 8Bit to Analog Broadcast Monitor

Maintain frame rate is ON.

Same thing happening if Playback Proxy is on Full or on Quarter resolution.

I also tried to convert it to Apple Pro Res 422 1920x1080 50i via Media manager, but same thing happening.

My configuration is in my signature. I'n using 4 SATA 2 disc in my Mac (one for projects, one for media, one for rendering).

I can't figure out what's wrong, is my Mac to slow (but FCP plays it ok), or my settings are wrong.
Please help, it's quite urgent, I have 20 x 1 hour TV shows, first should be on the air in 10 days.

Also, if someone could tell me, should I stick to DVCPRO HD or keep converting to Apple ProRes.

Thank you

Seth

Color cannot play back full frame rate video. Generally 12fps is about the best most people get. We generally get about that.

As for DVCPro HD to ProRes, that's pretty much what we started doing here. Send to Color then render out to ProRes.

Tnx Valter, that's good to know, 12 fps is quite ok, I just needed to know that I'm doing everything as I should.

I forgot about one thing in workflow: I'm not an editor, I'm just grading color, so editors are sending me finished project as DVCPRO HD.

Should I send it as DVCPRO HD to Color and then render it back as ProRes or should I tell them to send me ProRes project and work with it?

I'm still trying to figure out all the benefits of ProRes. For now, I see that picture on broadcast monitor look better in ProRes, cause in DVCPRO looks "interlaced" which is a bit confusing since both are "upper" field.

Tnx

If you're going to donwrez, then staying in DVCPro "Original Format" in the Project settings might be the most effective use of your resources. ProRes is a square pixel format, so at the very least you will not be required to make any aspect ratio adjustments on the return to FCP.

Now I have a new, bigger problem!
I stayed with DVCPRO (tnx Joseph) and send it to Color. I did some grading and its working great. Than suddenly I've realized I'm MISSING a few shots! It's not a gap they are just not there. And few others have reversed order.
I've tried everything, even deleting audio, but it's always the same. Did someone else encounter something like that?
It's a multiclip project, could that be the problem?
