Black Magic Intensity
by Andrew McKee on Nov 1, 2009 at 2:08:29 pm

Just installed a Black Magic Intensity Pro on a Mac Pro running FCS3. Someone is running a timeline with HDV 1080i footage transcoded to ProRes on capture. Getting an output fine out of FCP but when we send to Color and choose the same output settings were not getting any signal out of the card. I've searched like crazy but can't seem to find a solution to this. Any potholes that I may have fallen down here?

Did you convert to ProRes via Firewire or through the card? When you convert to ProRes via Firewire it remains anamorphic and that has caused issues with other people using Color. The best way to convert HDV to ProRes is via a capture card that supports this so you get a full raster 1920x1080 capture and not 1440x1080. We use the AJA Kona 3 in our shop to do this conversion.

Also ensure you quit FCP so it's not running at the same time as Color.

And ensure you're set up for 1080i 8 or 10bit viewing through your card in Color.

Beyond that I'm not sure.

It was done through Firewire so that may explain it. No chance of recapture now, it would mean redoing the edit as neither ProRes or HDMI have timecode. We have been quitting FCP so that wont be the issue. Would this be the same with ordinary capture HDV then?

I don't suppose anyone can come up with a workaround?

I'd guess a Media Manage to ProRes to force the right pixel dimensions would do the trick then send that to Color- a recapture doesn't seem necessary here.

Thanks Noah, I'll give that a try. A generation of compression seems an OK price to pay to be able to monitor in Color.

Yeah and to be honest- ProRes is one of those codecs that looks pretty good generation to generation. Especially compared to something like DV or H.264.
