Slight Gamma Shift COLOR>FCP in ProRes4444
by Matthew Riggieri on Oct 26, 2009 at 3:51:05 pm

Hello All

I have finished up a grade in the new prores4444 and sent it back to color. AND IT DOESN"T LOOK LIKE WHAT IGRADED. There is a slight gamma shift and basically does not hold up the same contrast. I am monitoring on both a Panasonic 11 series plasma and a 23" JVC over HD-SDI. It is very clear that we are not looking at the same thing in FCP as we did in color. I though there was suppose to be no shift in 4444. Anyone see this and know what the issue is.

Project was REDCode 28 2:1
Transcoded from original files to PRORES444 with a full debayer at 5000k and rec709
monitored in FCP and Color over blackmagic extreme using 1080p23.976 10bit preset

cheers
matt

Did you use any LUT on this? There is an FCP LUT and it should not be used.

David

Peace

ahhh I just had this same problem today. Are you monitoring 10 bit in Color and 8 bit in FCP or vice versa?

I had 10 bit in Color and 8 bit in FCP (by accident) and noticed the same thing

Well if you're using a Kona or Blackmagic card in the View Menu > Video Output > the choice will be format, frame rate and bit depth. Choose 10 bit if looking at ProRes

i have noticed, when working in color 1.5, if you have force RGB enabled in your preferences in color, it is applying some kind of LUT in color while working from RED footage. It doesn't affect non red footage. though it isn't a subtle shift. pretty drastic. the fix is to uncheck FORCE RGB in color. what you see in color is now what will render out. unfortunately, you'll probably have to reset the contrast on all your grades, since you were effectively monitoring with a lut that you didn't know about.

hope this helps
