Slo Mo issues when vignetting in Preview
by walter biscardi on Sep 23, 2009 at 10:26:58 am

Just noticed an issue with Slo Mo shots and the Preview Tab in a Secondary Room with Color 1.5.

When you're parked on a slo-mo shot and you switch to the Preview Tab, the shot will change in the Preview and Output. It just changes to another part of the raw clip that is not used in the timeline. Switch out of the Preview Tab, move the playhead one frame and it switches back to the correct part of the clip.

Does not affect renders at all, just what you're seeing in the Preview Tab and your output monitor. Makes it near impossible to position and keyframe a Vignette using the Preview Tab, so you have to switch out and use the numeric controls instead.

There's a full report with images in my blog as well. Of course, this is a minor hassle over having to bake the slo mo like in Color 1 so I'll live with this one for now.

Hi Walter,

I've never seen this type of issue before. I went to your blog to see the issue, then I tried to recreate the problem.

Here is my steps.
I created a sequence with 720p 30 footage with visual timecode. 2 clips. Clip one I slowed down to 75 percent. Clip 2 slowed down to 50 percent. 1 second dissolve between the two clips.

Next I selected the secondary and created a vignette using the Preview tab. Clip did not move at all. Did an inside color correction. Cued to clip 2 and created a circle vignette using the Preview tab. Clip also did not change frame when I opened the Preview tab. I also stepped the clip frame by frame to the start of the dissolve and positioned the vignette without issue.

Unfortunatly I could not reproduce the issue you are having.

Some questions.
Is your speed change a ramp or a constant slow down?
What media format is causing this issue?
Is this a multi-format project?
Is the issue displayed on both the Cinema display and the SDI Out?

My biggest problem with the "new" way Color handles Speed changes is you cannot do keyframes on a clip with speed changes. Which is a terrible trade off. You never know when you need to do keyframed color changes until you are grading. Best solution is still baking in the speed change.

I still don't understand why FinalCut will not do a bake and replace for all speed change clips as prep for Color. I thought I remember someone telling me that is done for Soundtrack Pro but I don't know Soundtrack so I don't know if thats true or not. But if its true, it should be done for Color. That would solve many user headaches if an automatic speed change prep in FCP was available.

Well I can now confirm this exact same issue occurs across all our FCP 7 systems so we definitely have ourselves a bug here.
