Monitor confusion
by Nigel Thompson on Sep 15, 2009 at 11:05:21 am

hey guys:

upgrading studio, need new monitor. CRT's are still great(if you can find one u can afford) Sony's 20F thingy goes for approx. 12k, plus the HDSDI module, 5k, and the control module is 1100 bucks. Im sorry but that is ridiculous.

Then Sony has and LCD thats LED backlit with HDMI in and stuff(BVML170) a 17 inch monitor for 13k. no mudules all built in

and im looking at the barco 23inch
http://www.barco.com/en/product/2146/specs
don't know the price

I have not seen that monitor nor the Ecinema DPX-2310 can you guys give me any insight on them, those who have either seen or evaluated them.

Im still very wary of the LCD technology but i know it have come quite a long way in a short period, right now it's just which is best right now for colour critical work

[Nigel Thompson] "Im still very wary of the LCD technology but i know it have come quite a long way in a short period, right now it's just which is best right now for colour critical work"

What's your total budget? There is "The Best LCD you can buy" and then there's "The Best LCD you can afford." I fall into that second category. We run two FSI 2450W's and one 1760W because they're the best LCD panels I have seen under $10,000.

I used to run Sony CRT HD monitors in our suites, but replaced them this year with the FSI's. I demo'd the TV Logic, Panasonic and FSI monitors before settling on the latter. Both the 2450 and 1760 are Grade 1 color critical monitors.

LED backlight is definitely where the flat panels are going but from what I've learned the technology is not quite there yet to mass produce the panels to color grade specs. Too much variation in the LEDs right now. Another couple of years and that will mature and you'll see more and more of those start to appear in the under $10,000 range.

Here's the link to FSI: http://www.flandersscientific.com/

And here's a link to a great "Watch & Learn" video series they have on there with frank discussions about monitors, 8bit vs 10 bit and LED vs flourescent backlights. Whether you buy from them or anyone else, this is a great set of 9 primer videos that give you some good advice on what to look for in LCD Monitors.
