IRE values, rules of thumb?
by Peter Daniel on Sep 2, 2009 at 6:12:52 pm

Hey all,

I'm currently grading some night-footage that's supposed to be very "dark". What are your experiences regarding the luma level of faces in such night shots? I know this is a highly subjective matter but are there any rules of thumb, e.g. never to go under a certain IRE value? Also regarding to a subsequent play on common computer and TV monitors.

The face/person should be quite recognizable to attract the view of the audience, while the fore- and background are commonly really dark. I used some shapes to mask my frame and currently set the faces to about 30 IRE. Is that a good value?

Thanks for any suggestions,
Pete.
