Re: Russell, tell us about your new toy! - RED ROCKET by Russell Lasson on Aug 8, 2009 at 2:39:51 am
Well, so far we're just doing tests with the RED Rocket. We haven't implemented it into our daily workflows yet.
But it is a complete game changer and a must have for anyone dealing with RED on a normal basis.
[Nate Weaver]"One thing I'd like to try out soon is transcodes to ProRes 4444 and keep the 12bit-ess of the R3Ds."
This is going to be a very popular workflow. You'll definitely see RED Labs that will render footage at full debayer for you to post at ProRes 4444. The only thing they need to do is to make sure the color balance is correct and that the luma range is optimized, then render out.
Current render speeds are around 16-17fps for 1080P ProResHQ, over 30 for 720P, and 2x real-time for SD.
As far as Color goes, it will help significantly for playback and render, but don't get your hopes up for render times to be as fast as other applications. Color isn't close to realtime rendering with any other format (ProRes, DPX, etc) and the RED Rocket isn't going to change that. So for fast turn arounds like dailies, there's got to be some other solution that will allow more than just primary color correction. We'll see what happens when the SKD is released.
But again, this is as revolutionary for post production as the camera was for production.
