Budged Color Grading Equipment
by Leonardo Hallal on Jul 15, 2009 at 11:57:32 pm

Hello everyone.

I need help on deciding the most cost-effective grading equipment, for a start. I already have a PVM I can use for SD, so my aim is HD upgrade. The i-mac I use is not good for HD work as advised in another post, so I'll trade it for a Mac Pro.

I am inclined to buy a new/used Mac Pro + AJA Kona-LH (USD1200) + 17" Flanders Scientific grade 1 monitor (USD2500).

Does anyone have advice whether this is or not a good (and cheaptes) configuration? Is the 17" good for color grading. I know it's small, but you gotta start somewhere (always being fair to clients money).

Render time is not an issue, but I need good monitoring.

My intention is to use color, Final Cut and Avid for grading on this station.

Your help is greatly apprecciated.

Yep, it's a Grade 1 monitor which we use in one of our edit suites here. Excellent monitor.

Which Graphics Card is in that computer? Make sure it's an ATI. Also make sure it has at least 4GB of RAM. If it doesn't definitely drop some more RAM in there.

And you say it's a Mac Pro with an LH, but I'm assuming you mean LHe. The LH was for the older generation G5's not the Mac Pro's. If that truly is an LH, then you're getting a G5, not a Mac Pro.

Double check those things.

Thank you, Walter.

I wasn't talking about a specific computer, just researching what my needs are. I'll probably buying the MAC Pro next week.

Thanks for clarifying the difference between the two Ajas. I'll look for the KHe. It is as good as the Kona 3, for monitoring (only) HD on the 17" Flanders (without the 3GBps input)?

If I decide to get a new Mac Pro, the only ATI option is the Radeon HD 4870 512MB. That would be the one, right?

What about Hard Drives. Am I all right with external firewire 800 for HD playback (mostly P2, HDV and XDCAM work. Never worked with 2K or RED in Brazil)?

One last question: practically, what does it mean to have a 1366x768 resolution on the 17" Flanders monitor? Would that influence my color grading judgement?

Thanks once more.

Love the forum.

for straight monitoring, yes.

That's what I would get.

I always recommend eSATA RAID Minimum, and I really like the SAS/SATA Raids myself.

None. It just means that anything above 720p native is scaled, but you an always put the monitor into 1:1 Pixel Mapping Mode which will show you your entire image, even up to 2k, in a pixel by pixel mode so you can see whether an artifact on screen is introduced by the scaling or in the original footage. If you go to the Flanders website, go to their video manual and watch the section on Pixel Mapping where they cover this exact topic.

Oi Leonardo,

if you need further help, contact me offline. I'm teaching RED in Germany and I'm coming to Brazil frequently. Where are you located?

Best regards,

Yes, make sure its an Intel machine or you won't be able to do any RED_One work, and I know there's a fever for it in Brazil.
