Is JVC DT-V1710CG 17-Inch good for color grading
by Leonardo Hallal on Jul 13, 2009 at 9:59:06 pm

Hello all,

Is this a good-enough monitor for color grading? I am aware that 17" is a small one, but I need a REAL budged monitor for color grading. I'm aiming for US$2500 or less.

I'd love to hear suggestions on other "cheap" HD monitors.

Thanks

Leo

[Joseph Owens] "No. "

Why? No, seriously. Why not?

Putting aside the usual prejudice over JVC (some of it well deserved, some less so) I grade on one, and I find it at least as good as a 20L5 once set up well. I've taken work I've done to post houses using £20k Sony BVMs and it ain't a million miles out. Sure, there's more of everything on the Sonys, but it's sins of omission rather than errors.

Would something like the FSI give significantly better colour fidelity than the JVC? Truer blacks? my only quibble from the JVC is the size - I'd prefer bigger, but the 42 inch Panny takes care of that.

Elaborating is a waste of time when the topic has been flogged to death for years -- the justifications are endless.

Paraphrasing Mark Twain: the difference between the right word and the wrong one is the difference between lightning and lightning bug.

That's my line in the sand.

[Joseph Owens] "That's my line in the sand."

Where is your line? That if you can't afford an eCinema and multi-thousand dollar projector in a custom built room you cannot be a serious Color user?

I really would like to know why a decent CRT working in REC709 colourspace, correctly calibrated, fed with HD video can't be used? OK - it isn't an eCinema, but that is precisely the point.

The OP asked for advice on budget monitoring solutions. IMHO, the JVC represents the lowest entry point to achieve a reasonably accurate representation of the luma and colour fidelity of the video signal you're dealing with. Caveats - that the room is correctly lit and the monitor calibrated for accuracy, but that's the same for low-end as it is for high. I've onlined and graded a mix of corporate, broadcast and cinema-release stuff on mine and clients have been more than happy with the end result - and double-checking on better gear lets me know that, as I stated in an earlier post, it's sins are those of omission rather than inaccuracy in the true sense. From that I can confidently use Color to make aesthetic changes, offering clients far more for their money than they would otherwise get.

So - to the OP - if 1500 bucks is your budget, then look at the JVC or a secondhand Sony 20L5 (I think the 14 too small). If you can spring another grand for the FSI, then do so. I'd love to be able to get one - heck, I'd love an eCinema or Tamuz or Sony BVM - but at the moment the JVC does just fine.

[Leonardo Hallal] "I need a REAL budget monitor for color grading."

"Budget" and "color grading" are mutually exclusive terms. A cheap HD video monitor is better than a computer monitor and can get you in the ball park, but I wouldn't trust one for any color-critical work.

That being said, Walter Biscardi recommends the Flanders Scientific 17" monitor for color grading on a budget. We have one where I work, and it's far better than the JVC in every way. Best of all, it's only $2500.

So, I guess I better buy a 17" Flanders monitor then, right? The reason I asked about the JVC is because it's a CRT and I figured it would have better blacks than the Flanders.

Thank you all for answering my question. It helped me a lot.
