FCP footage not opening in Color
by Gray Wilson on Jul 1, 2009 at 9:48:44 pm

Hi all! I'm in a bit of a pickle. I just updated my Final Cut Studio
FCP 6.0.6, Color 1.0.4. The problem is that when I send footage from Final Cut to Color using the send to option, color opens up but there is no footage. I've tried everything I can think of and finally gave up. Any ideas?
Thanks,
Gray

What sort of footage? Color only supports certain codecs/resolutions.

Prores 422. It worked perfectly before the update. FCP exported the footage after I used the "send to color" command and Color opens but there's no footage. For some reason the programs are no longer talking to each other.

Sony HVR-V1U recorded in 24pA mode with 3:2 pulldown transcoded to prores upon ingest removing 3:2 pulldown for 24p HD
I have experimented with HDV, H.264, Prores, AIC, nothing. The programs are just not talking to each other. I'm thinking about just doing a total reinstall.

[Gray Wilson] "I have experimented with HDV, H.264, Prores, AIC, nothing. The programs are just not talking to each other. I'm thinking about just doing a total reinstall."

The programs don't really "talk" to each other. The "Send To Color" command is just a script that exports out an XML file, launches Color, and then Color imports that XML file to recreate the timeline.

Sometimes, that the automated export/import fails. As in your case.

The next thing to try: Rather than "Send To Color" use Export>XML from FCP. Rename the file and save it where you'll find it. Quit FCP. Open Color. At the dialog box to Open/Save, navigate to the FCP XML export and open it. Frequently, Color opens it properly and you have a populated timeline.

Then check it by Saving, then Send to FCP and compare the timelines to make sure they match.

Of those, ProRes is the only codec you actually want to use.

What are you expecting to see? You use the Send to Color Command in FCP to send your timeline to Color. You color grade, Render and then Send to FCP to send a rendered timeline back to FCP.

Thank you for the help. I was expecting to see my time line from Final Cut in color. The problem was when I sent it from Final Cut, Color would open and be blank. I'll export an XML file and see if that does it. It will be interesting to see if color will send the data back to final cut or not. I'll post my results.
Thanks again,
Gray

So you have your Sequence open.

You select "Send to Color"

And you get a blank timeline?

Something's wrong there. I've never seen that happen here as long as I have the proper Sequence open and selected.

I know, it's bizarre. It worked perfectly until I updated Final Cut to 6.0.6 and Color 1.0.4 .

I'd guess the wrong codec or an overcomplex timeline. Try sending out a single clip timeline with ProRes. If that doesn't appear in Color you probably need to reinstall Final Cut Studio.
