Workflow for High Definition
by Ruth Moore on Feb 24, 2008 at 4:54:21 am

So far i've just been using uncompressed avi files from premiere, sticking them in ultra to key, and putting them in flash for web use. What is the best export settings for 1080i footage? Adobe told me to try Blue Ray M-peg format, but it seems to mess up the frame rate or bitrate (which I don't understand well). I know it messes it up because the clip isn't the same length anymore, and when I try to merge it with the audio again, i always have to manually find where it matches. Suggestions?

I capture or import into Vegas and export as Cineform avi. Ultra works very well with this format and the audio stays with the video and in sync. Cineform also makes a capture and convert software called NEO HDV. So if you don't have Sony Vegas which comes with the ability to export as Cineform, and you want to use Premier, NEO is you best bet. There is also a codec from Elecard which allows Ultra to work with m2t, native HDV files but it doesn't work well with it. Cineform files are lossless and much much smaller than uncompressed too. Hope this helps. I also export as cineform progressive scan as it will key much better than interlaced.

So far, i've been using adobe products: premiere, after effects, and ultra. I downloaded a cineform product and it overwrote something in premiere (which it was supposed to do according to that program) but it screwed up premiere so that it no longer imported m2t files. So It's a lose, lose situation. Is there any other way to compress the files more? I mean I'm exporting 30 Gig files from Ultra - and clips are no longer than 2 mintues - it's slightly rediculous.

That doesn't seem right that premier wont import m2t files anymore. You can try system restore to get that feature back. But if you have aspect HD from Cineform, try converting the m2t files to cineform avi. Then import them into Ultra, do your keying and export as cineform also. Cineform is very lossles and still fairly small compaired to uncompressed. You can stay as cineform all the way until your finished product.Cineform is an intermediate format and is easily handled with premier and vegas than m2t. Unless your printing back to tape, you don't need to go back to m2t at all. Danny
