OnLocation XML in FCP
by Craig Reed on Jul 10, 2009 at 7:49:22 pm

I'm a Mac FCP user, and just purchased OnLocation with Premiere CS4. I've gotten past the "clips not optimized for Final Cut" dialog by selecting them and recompressing them all in Media Manager, though I did not see any property differences except for the Little Endian vs. Big Endian audio tracks.

My question is how to import the OnLocation XML file resulting from Export All Clips, into Final Cut. the output format of the file is "Adobe OnLocation Export (*.xml)"

The XML import attempt in FCP results in a dialog requesting I point it to a translation document, which I do not have. Is there such a translation document available for this type of XML import from OL to FCP?

My main focus for doing this is to take advantage of markers created in OnLocation inside Final Cut.

Hi Craig,
The xml file that's created when you export from OnLocation is simply a list of the clips that you exported. It contains neither content (i.e., video) nor any metadata about them.
Exporting should copy the clips in question to the Clips folder that lives inside the same folder as the xml file. The metadata is inside the copied clip or, in the case of HDV/M2T clips, in a sidecar file.

I haven't gone hunting for myself, but I'll be surprise--nay, astonished--if FCP shows the markers that you added in OnLocation. To the best of my knowledge, FCP does not read any XMP metadata.

Thank you, Mark. That saves me some time experimenting.

I am also wondering what the .SMVP files are in the Clip Info subfolder with our clips. We are shooting QT format from basic DV camera source. There is one for each video clip in the Clips folder and they open in a text editor as XML files. Any chance they contain marker info? I can always experiment with naming markers in OnLocation and seeing if the names show up in the SMVP file along side any useful information. Thought I'd ask first in case you knew off hand.

Thanks again,
-Craig

The SMVP file mainly contains metadata. That's where the info is kept for placeholders in the project prior to recording the clips, and then it's kind of a backup to what's stored in the clip.

The comment markers are represented in the SMVP, but you might not find them particularly useful as they're saved in hexadecimal (at least I think it's hex. I'm not fluent...)
