Hey everyone, I have both Cs3 and CS4 versions of OnLocation. They both seem to show a delay when playing back HDV (by at least a whole second). Is there a setting within OL or with my display that will correct this? The two systems are a) a crappy PC, and b) a 15" Macbook Pro with 2gb ram 256mb video card.
Thanks,
Braden

Not sure what you mean by "playing back HDV"

Do you mean it shows a delay when the camera is playing back?

Is the audio delayed when you're playing back a OnLo captured HDV clip?

Or...is it that there is a delay between the camera and the OnLo signal while you're taping?

(and keep in mind that humans sense a lip sync error at about 30 milliseconds...so a delay of a second would be significant gap...2-4 words depending on who is talking)

First thoughts lead me to think you're seeing the GOP nature of HDV (mpeg) which can create a bit of a delay. This is because frames are interdependent on each other, unlike DV or DVCPro which uses intra-frame compression.

Sorry to be unclear, I'm refering to monitoring an HDV signal from a camera. The delay is over a second long, making the software mostly useless. Is there a remedy for this? Are other people having this same issue?

HDV's similarity to DV is sometimes overstated. It has the same data rate, tape stock, and connectivity (FireWire), but the amount of juice it takes to encode/decode is different.

I've always experienced a greater delay with HDV than DV with Onlocation and it's predecessor, Serious Magic's DV Rack. Keepin mind that the camera is not passing baseband video/audio like a BNC/XLR cable would have in the analog world, the video/audio is captured, then encoded (compressed), then recorded/shipped out on the FW cable as data, then received by the computer, written to harddrive and decoded (decompressed)and played back in the status viewer panels in OnLo. It is not an instantaneous process.

Again, i don't know that I've ever experienced a one-second delay...but I have probably experienced delays bordering on a half-second at times...less with DV.

...and i use workstation replacement laptops more often than not...so the computer's specs (provided the system isn't below the basic performance requirements) don't have that much to do with the delay.

A friend of mine has OnLocation so I tested my HV20 on his 2.4 GHz Macbook Pro, using firewire.

I also experienced an overwhelming delay. I don't know if it was a second (a second is actually quite a long time when you think about it), but it did seem to be so great that it made the software impractical for my use.

As Tim was saying, Firewire requires a lot more processing in both the camera and on the computer, so I would have to blame Firewire as the cause. I should note that I also get a similar delay while importing footage from my HV20 through Final Cut.

If both your camera and computer support it, I would think that you would have better luck using SDI, BNC, or some other method of connecting the two devices together.

I'm experiencing over a minute delay

I'm setting up Onlocation for the first time. I have a Sony EX1 with the latest firmware. The laptop is a Sony VAIO VGNAR825E dual core 2.0 GHz. The graphics card is NVIDIA GeForce 8400 GT. Vista 32 Bit. 4 GB RAM, 1080i HDV settings.

With this type of delay the program is unusable. If you make a small adjustment and you need to wait 80 seconds to see what the results are, it could take a long time to set up a shot.

Any suggestions?

Problem solved by calling Adobe tech support at 800 642-3623.

Was it a Microsoft or Adobe update to blame? Possibly loading the Sony EX1 programs? Whatever hosed my system it wasn't easy to fix.

First Failed attempt:
I followed an knowledgebase article that said uninstalling and reinstalling the CS4 Creative Suite would solve the issue. It only funked up my system more when it Failed to uninstall. Reinstalling Failed. Adobe Knowledgebase Did Not have another solution I could find.

Second Failed attempt
Calling Adobe tech support the first time I was given prcedures for using the Microsoft Clenup tool and Adobe CS4 cleanup tool and deleting temp files. This did not solve the problem.

Third successful attempt (I'm keeping my fingers crossed)
The second call to Adobe Tech support worked and hopefully solved the problem. I'll test and post results later. I suggest talking directly to Adobe support and have them take you through a long convoluted process that requires using the CS3 "Clean Script" tool (search Adobe Support to find) run twice at level 2 and twice at Level 4 (undocumented) then PREFETCH, MSCONFIG, and Creating a new Administrator account to load CS4 again.

Results are after a 5 hour battle, OnLocation is functioning with a second or two delay.

Now I will need to download the 779MB Adobe CS4 update. The Internet's slow today so by tomorrow I might have the tests completed.
