Anyway to get HD into OnLocation?
by TL Westgate on Jul 2, 2008 at 7:10:13 pm

We have the CS3 video package (with OnLocation) and just bought a Canon XH A1. So far, I am loving this camera. Optionally, you can buy Canon's CONSOLE program, which does what OnLocation does (and a whole lot more), but it costs an additional $600. Which is money the higher ups aren't willing to spend right now.

I tried the camera with OnLocation over firewire to no avail. Any tips, tricks, or workarounds to get it to work? Or is OnLocation strictly for standard definition?

Click the menu button on your monitor in OL. Select HDV and choose your format.

Yes Matt is correct. Your format choices are m2t and mpg. Premier works great with mpg as thats what it records but Vegas works better with m2t as I've had problems with missing frames, showing red in the timeline with mpg files recorded with OL. The help file explains the differences between them, something about if timecode is need or not, which format to choose. So you like the Canon huh?
I use a Sony HVR-A1 HDV camera and it works great with OL. Have you fooled with Ultra yet for green screen? There's a live preview feature which allows you to see how your video will look over a background before recording. VERY usefull to setup camera angle, distance and lighting, all very important in making a convincing key. It unfortunatly only works with DV and not HDV. You can set your camera to output DV temporarly while setting it up, then switch back to HDV when recording. OL has a great help file which isn't too long and will show you other great features like onion skin and split screen. Check it out. OL rocks. Danny Hays
