video lag in OL
by Amir Sharafeh on May 11, 2008 at 9:05:50 pm

Just bought a new laptop AMD 2.1 dual, 3GB ram, 200 GB 7200 RPM hard drive, and I followed OL instructions to cut my lag time down, but it did absolutely nothing. My lag is a good 20-30 frames. I am not even recording. Just previewing. I am using Sony HDR-FX1 and a 25 ft. firewire, which I understand should be fine. Is there something that I am missing in OL that can cut that lag down? I don't run other apps, and unfortunately I don't know how to turn off Norton, to see if that helps. Now I'm stuck with a $1100 laptop that can not do what it supposed to do.

Recording via firewire, there will always be some lag in the recording preview no matter which capture software you use. Onlocation is mainly used to setup the camera prior to capturing. If you need absolute real time try the composite or component out of the camera to a tv. Hope this helps. Danny Hays

Danny is right.

Some lag will always be present as you have an analog>digital step in the camera and a FW/HDV decode step back at the computer...

I use laptops that cost in the mid 3Ks...and they work the same way.
