Can OnLocation record from multiple cameras?
by Matt Penner on Apr 7, 2008 at 11:14:44 pm

I haven't been able to find an answer to this.

I record a computer user group meeting every month. I have two video sources: MiniDV camera and capturing hardware that records the computer screen.

When I edit the video I have to manually sync these together and also deal with breaks in the live footage when I have to switch tapes.

With OnLocation can I records both streams at the same time? This would not only allow me to get rid of my tape limitation but also have the two video sources automatically synced.

Thanks,
Matt

No. On Location will only see one camera at a time. There are other ways to make syncing easyier. Vegas 8 can import video into multi camera mode by it's time stamp so if you set the computer and tape machine time to the same time, You can auto maticly get the tracks very close.. An old but very good way is to clap one time loudly at the beginning of each recording. Hook a mic to the tape machine if not already there. The spikes in the wave forms are very easy to see and sync with. Danny

I might be missing something and I am new to OL but why does the manual say "Connecting multiple cameras - Adobe OnLocation lets you connect as many cameras as you have 1394 buses. However, Adobe OnLocation does not support multiple cameras connected to one FireWire card. The system must have one FireWire bus for each camera."

Now the question I didn't see answered was recording multiple cameras at the same time if you do have two firewire cards - is that possible ?

In my practical experience, OnLocation records from a single device at a time. In other words, you could attach two cameras, and switch between them for different takes, but there's not a way to actually attach the recorder to multiple cameras and record simultaneous feeds. I have an onboard Firewire port, and a card with multiple inputs. With one camera on the card, and one camera on the onboard port, I can still only record one at a time.

Newtek's TriCaster provides a means of inputing multiple cameras and switching between them live, and can then shunt the mixed output to a recorder. Theoretically, this would work with OnLocation, provided the TriCaster output would be recognized as a "device" on the Firewire bus. It still doesn't give you the option of having two streams to cut later- you have to do the cutting live while shooting. Tricaster is also rather pricey, but comparitively cheaper than broadcast TV equipment which has similar functionality.
