iPod Touch Gen 1 - as digital audio recorder

Every now and then I need a digital audio recorder (I may need to lav more people than I have wireless units, or I'm putting a POV camera without audio inputs into a vehicle). I have an H4, but it is large, and when I travel light, it usually stays home.
So I'd like to know whether I can use something I do tend to take with me: an iPod Touch 32gb, 1st gen. Apple sells a combination earphones/mic that plugs into the earphone jack, but it only works on 2nd generation or later iPod Touch. And it doesn't look like a very serious mic anyway.
For the iPod Touch Gen. 1, there are several after-market thingamajobs which use the power port for a mic input. Some even seem to have plugs for external mics. Has anyone here used any of these? Is the voice audio quality at all reasonable for broadcast video?
