Question about using iPod Classic
by Penka Penkova on May 20, 2009 at 8:53:10 am

Hi to everybody. I have an iPod 160GB (how do I check what gen it is?) and I've realized it can't have separate folders on it, like all the other players. You upload a folder with music on the device and it sees everything like songs and uses only the ID3 tags. Which is totally inconvenient. How can I make it work at least similar to the other mp3 players?

My goal is to have the option to browse folders on my iPod and choose which one to play.

To find out what iPod you have, go to this page:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1353

iPods work via Playlists as opposed to folders. Its a lot more convenient. Just go into iTunes and create some playlists (from the file menu).

You can create different playlists, smart playlists and also have iTunes use the Genius option to create new playlists based on your listening habits. In addition, you can choose what playlists to sync and which to not sync, which is very handy.

I thought of that option, but this would mean I have to make hundreds and hundreds of playlists, which would be a total madness? One thing - making them and another thing - bloating the iPod.

Playlists are tiny text files, you could have hundreds and take up a tiny bit of space.

Plus with hundreds of folders you would have to move and copy things...playlists just POINT to a song. So you could have 100 songs and create 50 different playlists with different songs and it would never take up much more space than the 100 songs.

Think of it like TV...300 different channels (playlists) on 1 cable box (folder) as opposed to one channel each on 300 different cable boxes.

Play around with playlists..Apple has created a lot of different ways to use them..check out things like Smart Playlists, select a certain artist with one click and a whole playlist is created of them from your library. There is also the iTunes DJ feature as well as Genius that figures out good playlists you would like.

I know that, maybe I didn't put my words right. I'm not worried about the space they would take. Making hundreds of playlists (maybe a thousand, looking at how much music I have) would slow down the work of the ipod and totally bloat it.
