moving a library
by steve goldberg on May 18, 2008 at 7:28:15 pm

Hi, I'm having trouble moving a library in iTunes. I have the latest version of iTunes and had the music on an external drive that is going to be needed for something else. I have copied all the music to a new drive and want to reconnect iTunes so it sees the new location. I was told that if I option start iTunes and choose an existing library it will work but it didn't and I don't see why it would. I never told iTunes where the library was moved to. I can't find that option anywhere.

any help?

steve

There is an XML file that can be edited so that you can change the directory for your music. Each song has a line in that XML file so you will need to do a Find and Replace so that it won't take forever. You should use a web editor to make the changes to the XML. If you don't have one use a simple text editor, NOT WORD.

Did you move the entire iTunes folder or just the music?

You need to move the entire folder and then hold down option while starting iTunes. Choose the iTunes library on the external drive.

There are no "technical solutions" to your "artistic problems".
Don't let technology get in the way of your creativity!

I use iPod to Computer, and everytime I format my computer, I use iDump to get all my songs back from my iPod. I even use it to give some of my songs to my friends. You can have a free try at http://www.aniosoft.com/download.html
