Newbie mic Q

Newbie mic question:
Currently I'm using on-board audio, but planning on upgrading to a dedicated sound card. But, I connected a AT2020 USB mic and checked the recording level in the control panel. Default level is 6. (this is with the on-board audio). I can change the level with the slider, but the apply button is always greyed out. Could this be because the recording level of 6 is the most the on-board audio can handle?

I see this on my laptop, Averatec 7100, with AMD Turion 1.6GHz, 1 GB RAM, as well as on my desktop, which I built with a Gigabyte GA-EP35-DS3P mb, Core2Quad 2.40 GHz, 4GB RAM.
I guess it's not that big of a deal since I can normalize the signal, but I'm not sure if I wouldn't get better results with a good sound card that can handle a stronger signal from the mic (assuming that's why I can't set the level higher). Thanks!

of course you will get a better signal with an external soundcard and an external microphone. If you are serious about podcasting and it is related to your business, your audio must be of good quality to retain your audience.
There are USB soundcards with mic inputs that you can use. There are also USB micrphones that plug direct to our computer's USB. Call or check with Sweetwater or MusiciansFriend fo details.
