Hi,
I am looking at getting a new laptop.
Looking at either i5 2450m or i5 3210m with 6gb RAM and 1tb of disk.
Question is - will integrated graphics be ok or will I require a dedicated card.
I will not be playing games on the laptop but will be editing movies using SV10.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Best Regards
Mark

The key here is you're asking about Vegas Pro 10.0. Version 10.0 only supported the GPU for rendering so having a dedicated graphics card will not affect your editing.

I assume you may keep that laptop for a while and Vegas Pro 11.0 and will take advantage of your GPU for editing. According to Sony, any GPU that supports OpenCL will work. Some just work better than others. So check if the integrated graphics support OpenCL.

If I were buying a laptop to use with Vegas Pro I would make sure that it had a dedicated NVIDIA graphics card to get the most out of Vegas GPU support. You don't want to buy a laptop based on Vegas Pro 10's capabilities and then be disappointed when you upgrade Vegas to a version that uses more GPU capabilities.

I forgot to mention that not only will your graphics card need to support OpenCL but it must also provide at least 512 MB of GPU memory. Check out Sony's GPU Acceleration page for all the details.

Thanks John.
I guess that I should look slightly ahead and your advice makes sense. I will look for a dedicated graphics card.
The version of Sony Vegas I use is Movie Studio HD Platinum version 10.
I assume your comments still apply.

Yes, they still apply because Sony Movie Studio Platinum 12 makes use of the GPU.

BTW, it would cause less confusion if you used the correct name for your software. Vegas Movie Studio 10 is usually abbreviated VMS10 which would immediately let people know that you are not talking about Vegas Pro (which I was referring to). In fact, Sony has dropped the name "Vegas" entirely for version 12 so it's now Sony Movie Studio 12 (SMS12). They probably did this because of all of the confusion with the Vegas name (i.e., the words "Sony Vegas" are ambiguous unless you qualify them with "Pro" or "Movie Studio"). ;-)
