Hi, I hope someone can help me.

I am new to Sony Vegas so I have been looking online and using tutorials etc. I aim to use Vegas for making HD gameplay montages from my Xbox 360.

My problem is this-
I record gameplay using my Haupaugge HD PVR in an mp4 format, and whenever I import these to Vegas its as if the video is 'too big' for the preview box as it only displays the top left corner of the video. I have rendered a small clip just to check if it would come out normal, but it also rendered this way.

The only solution I have found so far is to use Arcsoft media converter, and 'convert' the mp4 file to an mp4 file??? I would be happy to do this all the time but some clips are up to a GB in size so it wouldnt be time efficient.

Any advice appreciated.

Craig

[craig mcarthur] "I record gameplay using my Haupaugge HD PVR in an mp4 format,"
You should be recording these as AVCHD files. They will edit easier in Vegas. I'm guessing you slelected the XBOX option because you are recording from an XBOX but actually, that option is for PLAYING on an XBOX which you are not doing (because you are editing in Vegas which is running on a PC). So you should be recording as AVCHD.

Right-click on the preview window and select Scale Video to Fit Preview Window. See if that fixes it.

Thanks for your reply,

Tried that checkbox and it made little difference.

I also tried both .ts and AVCHD and when I imported them to vegas all that came up was two tracks of audio- no video. Any ideas?

Do you have any codec-paks installed?

What version of Vegas are you using?

I edit AVCHD from the HD PVR all the time with Vegas Pro 9 & 10 without any problems.

If you've never heard of a codec-pak then that's good. Chances are you didn't install one and you don't want to install one. Still it's very odd that your Vegas Pro 10 cannot edit AVCHD files from the HD PVR and mine can. Something about your PC is conflicting with Vegas and making this not work.

What is the resolution of the MP4 file you are recording? (1280x720? 1920x1080?)

What are your project settings (Press Alt+ENTER to see)

Can you post a screenshot of what you are seeing so that we can see too?

Right, I just checked the computer and there is a K-lite codec pack already installed. I have now uninstalled it and about 20 windows appeared saying something like 'Directshow link is broken, remove from registry?' I said yes to all.

Project settings-

I dont have any AVCHD files at the moment to make a screenshot. Later on tonight (UK) I will try recording again now that the codec has been removed, and will update you.

Just did a test run using AVCHD, and it imported straight into vegas with no issue whatsoever. It must have been that codec causing the issue. Thank you so much for your help, I really appreciate it. I was getting worried after spending all that money on all this kit.

Thanks again,

Craig

Yea, we see this a lot. Codec-paks are fine for multi-media PC's but you should never install one on a video editing workstation because it will really mess things up. Glad that an uninstall was all it took to clean up.
