Zoom in on HD to create DVD resolution? Ever tried this? Good Results?

Newby question...

I taped a dance performance from the back of the venue with my HD camera and, er, like a fool didn't zoom in enough. I left too much space on each side of the dancers that is wasted and the dancers are too small--not enjoyable to watch.

I've already captured the HD footage as Mini-DV footage (since I'm making a DVD anyway--not Blu Ray--thought it would make the project simpler, less data, and easier to work with) but perhaps there is a solution:

Using Vegas Movie Studio can I re-capture the HD footage as real HD then once it's on the timeline zoom in for the entire performance?

That's one of the benefits of HD, right, being able to zoom in? Plenty of resolution to work with???

Has anyone done this and had good results?

Pete

Yes, yes and yes.
NTSC SD is only 720 x 480 so you have lots of room to zoom in and/or crop the final shot.
