Rendering for HD quality

Hello there. I am brand new to Sony Vegas (currently using 7) and have just bought a Sony HDR SR7e for the birth of my child in 3 weeks. Have been playing around shooting HD footage of my dogs etc and have got my head around the basics of titling and editting so far. I have burned the HD footage to a standard PAL widescreen DVD, but it appears pixellated at times? I think this is due to my rendering? My questions therefore are:-
1. When shooting in HD (AVCHD), what should i render my completed project in, prior to burning to disk. There are so many options, avi, WMV, MP4 etc
2. Am i best to save and burn my projects in AVCHD to a DVD, therefore making them only playable on a BluRay player. Presumably BluRay burners will soon become common and affordable?
3. Shooting in HD and then creating a project in effect, in SD and burning to normal quality on a DVD - is this likely to cause the pixellation problems i am experiencing?
4. When selecting to create a new HD project, there are 3 options 1080 60i(For the US market i think) 1080 50i (the one i should be using, again, i think) and 1080 24p (not sure what this is) Can you help? Is 1080 50i for me?
Thanks for your time guys, i am keen to be in the know before the baby arrives and really appreciate your assistance in advance
