Adobe Premiere 6, split screen
by Katie Judd on Oct 20, 2009 at 3:10:30 pm

Hi, I think this is more of a language problem. I want more than one clip to appear on the screen. If I use split screen, I only get half of each clip appearing. How can I achieve 2 or more boxes on the screen with different clips appearing in each one (without only seeing part of the clip). Hope this makes sense!

Many thanks

Katie

Can I add to this message. I have successfully gone into motion settings now, but want my clips to stay still! At the moment, I can only have them sliding across the screen. Can anyone help?? Thanks.

'sliding'.. It sounds like you may have added keyframes. One with a starting position, and another with a an ending position.
Either try making the positions the same, or get rid of the additional keyframe.

Using Effect/Distort/Transform to resize the image will give better results than the motion parameter, at the cost of a slightly increased render time.

If your video is interlaced, you should r-click on the clip and set it to deinterlace.

Just some ideas.

Thanks for you quick reply. Have tried your suggestions but to no avail (prob my fault). I r click on clip and go to video options/motion and the slide is already there. If I lost it - I lose the clip altogether on the timeline - there is just a white background. I have effect/distort .. but no transform on my version (6 so very old). If you are able to tell me where I am being stupid, I would be most grateful.

Thx. Katie

Hmmm. Sorry for misguiding you, I've never used v6. Perhaps the motion parameter is the way to go, and disregard the Transform suggestion.

I'm afraid it sounds like there are significant differences in the interface, that I'd only be guessing as to a solution.

I use PP 1.5 and the motion params are in a tab next to the monitor.
I see the parameters, and the keyframe markers.

I wonder, if you were to move the CTI to the beginning of the clip, set the motion param to resize it and position it.. Then, move the CTI to the end of the clip and do the same, if that would do the trick - keep the resized clip in one place.

Again, I'm sorry, as I'm just guessing.

Bear with me - I'm trying to remember, as Premiere 6.x was a while ago.

The Motion requester is what you want. You need to make the start and end keyframes the same - there are buttons for that alongside the little preview window. And you need to scale the clips to 25% - each will have room above and below it.

As I remember it, that requester was a PITA. PPro is much nicer.

Each clip will need to be in its own track. I'd see a minimum of three video tracks here, as you'll want some element below both clips.

Maybe tomorrow I could try to put 6.5 back on an old barely used machine and experiment with it. I hope you're not up against a time crunch.

This is really really kind of you. Please know that whilst I have been using this programme for a few years, my knowledge is still pretty basic - so I'm not sure what a PITA is!!! Many many thanks,
Katie

Pain In The...

OK - I can not find my v6.5 Premiere. It's in a box someplace.

I found something here online:

http://www.jeremymoore.com/AdobePremiere/FAQ/#Anchor-3.2

The relevant text follows:

3.2 Picture in Picture

1. Place one clip on the timeline on the "Video 1A" or "Video 1B" track. This will be the background video.
2. Place your second clip on "Video 2" track or above.

o You have a few options here:Use "Clip -> Video Options -> Motion..." and set the begin and end time to the same settings (position and zoom). Use a zoom value of less than 100% (maybe around 25%) for the smaller images

or

o Use the effect "Perspective -> Transform" and set the "Scale Width" and "Scale Height" to the same values (maybe around 25%). Set the "Position" where you want the video to be placed.

Note that you can overlap many videos on top each other on the Video 2+ tracks and set the positions/size as above to get some really cool effects (multiple videos play and moving around, etc.) Set different keyframes for position, scale, and rotation to add even more complexity to your video.

I hope this is useful/helpful.
