Saving projects into CD/DVD for playing
by Abu Abdullah on May 6, 2008 at 10:34:38 am

Hello,

I am new to video editing.
Now that I have created my new project in Premiere CS3.

1. How to play the project in CD/DVD players?
2. Is there any different between the projects that are intended to be played in standalone CD/DVD players and those projects intended to be played only in PC or MAC workstations?
3. What confeused me more is when they talk about the called CODEC!!

Thanks

Producing a DVD can be a bit complicated.
Once you've finalized your edit in Premiere you'll want to export a DVD-Video compliant MPG file using Adobe Media Encoder under File/Export...
Desktop videos such as MOV or WMV or AVI are not DVD compliant.

You can burn a DVD right out of Premiere, but I'd recommend against it.
Use Premiere for editing.
Use Adobe Media Encoder or Main Concept MPEG Pro for encoding.
Use Adobe Encore for DVD authoring.
Use Nero or Toast, or whatever burning app you use to burn the DVD.

If I'm doing a project for both DVD and desktop delivery I'll export the DVD-video compliant MPEG, than export an uncompressed version of the video for resizing and encoding to a desktop format.

File types such as AVI, MOV, and MPG are like media containers. Generally they hold audio and video which are encoded by a CODEC (COmpressor-DECompressor).
So, the movie file uses an audio codec and a video codec. These codecs are required when you encode or compress your movie, and they are required when you want to play the movie. Codecs are installed in your operating system or in digital video playback hardware such as a DVD player.

Try reading through the threads on this forum. There's a ton of information here.

Thank you very much Vince!

You briefly explained every thing and you brought one new question. You said "Codecs are installed in your operating system or in digital video playback hardware such as a DVD player."

So, do all DVD players hold the same CODEC?

Is there anything I have to be aware of when I burn the movie into a DVD?

Thanks again.

All DVD players have all of the audio and video codecs needed to play DVDs. Typical DVD codecs are MPEG2 for video and MPEG-1 Layer 2 or DVD_LPCM_AUDIO for audio. Many DVD players will also play VCDs, some even play MP3 and WMV formatted files.

When you export your movie use presets for DVD-Video.
Do the same for burning, burn a disc that is of the DVD-Video format.
