iPhoto and Photoshop

Hi there,
This is probably more an iPhoto question, but I hope you can help anyway.
I am fairly new to using Mac and have to get use to the file management system, especially iPhoto.
I can understand, that when importing a raw (.NEF) file into iPhoto it automatically makes a JPEG copy. But some of the photos seems to be in RAW anyway...? In my iPhoto preferences I have changed the edit settings to open in Photoshop instead of iPhotos own editing options. That works fine, my raw images opens correctly. But when I from Photoshop go to open and into iPhoto library, I can only open the JPEG copy. Have you got any idea why?
Also, when going through open in Photoshop, I can change file-type and resolution. What's the purpose of this?

in IPhoto you also need to use the preference in the Advanced tab called Use Raw when using External Editor. Also choose the 16 bit TIFF option as well.
