Select by luminance range/greyscale

Argh! I'm sure there's an amazingly simple way to do this, but danged if I can remember...

I want to make a selection based on luminance, in an RGB image, in this case everything above "X", but being able to select a range between "X and Y" would be nice too.

How does one do this? (Anticipating a "d'oh!" moment.....)
