Hi there,

I followed a tutorial, where you can turn a text layer into a 3 d layer just by applying the shatter effect on a layer underneath (can be an image or video).

The tutorial is here:

Now it IS 3d, which is great, but the type looks awfully unsharp.

How come?

What are the horizontal & vertical dimensions of your comp? I suspect it isn't a square-pixel comp.

the pitfall of using shatter is that the custom shatter map is always rasterized to a 1-bit image (like either black or white, no shades of grey in between) making a rather jaggy bitmapped look to the edges.

chad probably should have mentioned that in his tutorial.

to try and get around that issue, try working in a comp that is about 4x larger than you need, then drop that into a comp that is the final size and scale it to fit. if it's still a bit to jaggy, try an 8x larger comp.

actually i just played around with it (it had been many years since i had used this technique), and working with a comp that is around 2x larger ( that's 2x the height and width, so 400% larger) should provide enough resolution to downscale to smooth edges.
