H.264 HD Aspect Ratio Problems
by Alex Mueller on Jun 24, 2009 at 8:36:53 am

I'm trying to make an HD video, 1280x720, and all is going fine, but when I export it, making sure it goes at exactly 1280x720, it does just that... except for the fact that the video is smushed in horizontally with widescreen bars (like if you watch a 4:3 picture of a 16:9 movie on a 16:9 TV, you get the widened image, and also the widescreen bars that were meant for the 4:3 image). How can I stop it from doing this

Umm.. care to share WHICH app you are using to compress or what you are exporting from.

I would alsways recommend rendering out square pixel... then take it into Adobe MEdia Encoder

I'm using Adobe Media encoder to encode the video, and I've tried square pixel, but not two-pass, so I'll try that.

As Richard implies, AE is definitely NOT the best application to use for good-looking H.264 video. For example, you can't do two-pass H.264 compression in AE, which makes for much better-looking video.

You're far better off to render out of AE using the best-quality codec you can, and then use the resulting file in a different compression application.

Adobe Media Encoder would be a good choice, as would Apple's Compressor in Mac-Land.
