What other kind of experience have you had in multimedia software: editing applications, 3D software, compression software, etc.?

How do you intend to use this, and in what application? Because you should never create an animation and render for final use within AE.

Do you expect this animation to have three dimensional depth, like an extrusion, or would it be two dimensional, like a piece of paper rotating on an invisible string?

Do you know what an alpha channel is? How about a looping animation?

What kind of computer do you have, and what operating system does it run?

Have you ever read a software manual? Which one(s)?

There, now wasn't that nice and polite?

1.) I have not much experience so far with 3d and effects i used to do little with final cut pro but even there i haven't figured out all the possibilities yet
2.) i don't know what's the best way of using it, i don't understand what you mean with: " Because you should never create an animation and render for final use within AE"
3.) I'm just trying to figure out after effects and i'm looking forward to be able to do both 2d and 3d if you can please explain both ways
4.) no... i could use a little help with alpha channel i never seriously worked with it and used it so rarely that i basically know thing about it and yes looping i think would be the best idea
5.) i use a mac with OS X (tiger) and aftereffects works great with it.

Y'know, I think you ought to put this little project of yours on hold. You need to learn to walk before you run.

AE is definitely NOT the kind of application where you can outline a few click-by-click steps and get a project done. When the software was originally written, it was intended for professionals, and it still retains that bias.

There are so MANY things you need to know at once that a proper response to your request could only be accomplished after a couple of days of writing. And guess what? I'm at work, and they expect me to do WORK!

I suggest you look over a series of podcasts on the COW called Multimedia 101, plus the AE tutorials and the podcasts to get a feeling for the way AE works. If you're a rank amateur -- and it certainly sounds like you are -- they can be a real help.

Romeo,

You probably have already found a sloution to this problem or gave up, but I do believe a novice can follow the instructions found here. It worked great for me and I have very little skill when it comes to animations.

Check it out: http://www.adobe.com/designcenter/flash/articles/aft7at_3dinflash.html

Hey,

Drag an AI, EPS, or alpha channeled PNG of your logo into the After Effects bin, then onto the New Comp icon. Highlight the clip in the timeline and press R to bring up the rotation settings, clicking the keyframe stopwatch on the rotation parameter you want (I'm assuming you want it on the Y-axis). Advance to the length of time you want the object to rotate one complete revolution, press N to set the end of the comp length, and enter the value 1 under the rotation parameter (where it says 0x). Then, slide that newly created keyframe a single frame past the out point of the comp, and Send to Render Queue. Now, you can set the video clip to loop and it'll be seamless.

Basically, alpha channels contain information about transparency. Meaning, if the background of a logo is supposed to be transparent, you need to save that transparency in a format that supports transparency, like PNGs, PSDs, TIFFs, and GIFs. JPGs don't support transparencies. You do this because you can't exactly save files in non-square formats. Is that clear?

Here's some additional info, but there are plenty of other resources too. :) Best of luck.

Kind Regards,
Richard
